Turmeric, a superfood cherished for hundreds of years, offers numerous health benefits. Discover the benefits of turmeric tea & how to add it to your routine.

In the ever-evolving world of health and wellness, turmeric root is one superfood that has truly stood the test of time. First enjoyed thousands of years ago for its warm, spicy flavor in cooked dishes and later valued for its potent health benefits, this vibrant root has become both a pantry and wellness staple worldwide.

What is Turmeric Root?

Turmeric is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Southeast Asia. It grows and spreads through rhizomes, knobby underground root systems that can be harvested annually. These rhizomes are sheathed in a slightly golden-hued, papery outer layer that exposes shockingly yellow-orange flesh when sliced or grated. The bright color of turmeric root is reflective of high levels of curcuminoids, powerful antioxidants that are behind the health benefits of this superfood.

The Health Benefits of Turmeric Tea

While the warming, spicy flavor of turmeric root can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes, one of the simplest and most delicious ways to enjoy this superfood is in cozy tea form! By sipping your turmeric, you can appreciate the full complexity of turmeric’s flavor while absorbing its nutrition quickly and efficiently. In case you need more convincing, here are our top five reasons to make turmeric tea a part of your daily wellness routine:

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: The most well-known benefit of turmeric root is its anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the primary curcuminoid in turmeric, has been shown to reduce chronic inflammation, thereby helping to manage a wide variety of health conditions.
  2. Antioxidant Powerhouse: Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the body’s cells from damage. Antioxidants help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.
  3. Enhanced Digestion: Turmeric stimulates the gallbladder to secrete bile, an important digestive aid. Sipping turmeric tea after a heavy meal supports comfortable, healthy digestion.
  4. Joint Health: Most joint pain stems from inflammation, which can be lowered through regular consumption of turmeric. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce pain and improve mobility.
  5. Immune Booster: Many of the compounds in turmeric have been shown to stimulate the immune system, helping our bodies to fend off infection and illness.

How to Make Turmeric Tea

If you frequent cafes and coffee shops, you’ve likely seen golden milk or turmeric lattes on more than a few menus. This drink combines powdered turmeric root with other warming spices—like cinnamon and black pepper—in a creamy milk (or milk alternative) base with a touch of sweetener. For a simple Golden Milk Latte recipe you can try at home, visit our favorite here. You can also try the Navitas Organics Turmeric Latte Mix for a quick and easy superfood treat.

If creamy drinks aren’t your thing, we have your back! Here’s a simple turmeric tea recipe that requires little more than boiling water and a few common kitchen spices:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp. Navitas Organics Turmeric Powder
  • 1 slice fresh ginger (optional)
  • Pinch of black pepper (this spice enhances curcumin absorption)
  • Dash of honey or lemon (optional)

Boil the water and add the turmeric, ginger and black pepper. Simmer for about ten minutes, strain and add honey or lemon to taste.
