Fair Trade Month is an annual initiative supported by organizations across the globe, including the World Fair Trade Organization, Fairtrade America and businesses like Navitas Organics to help celebrate fair trade practices around the world. At Navitas Organics, they're excited to celebrate Fair Trade Month during October and every month, as they continuously work to change the status quo of our global food system by providing small-scale farmers in developing countries access to safe working conditions and fair wages. Navitas wants to be leading voices in aiding a sustainable global food system that supports the health of both people and planet.

What Does Fair Trade Mean?

Fair trade, as the name suggests, is working to make global trade fairer for all people involved. It focuses on improving working conditions, increasing wages for farmers and workers, and making the process of global trade more transparent. Overall, fair trade is working to eliminate child labor and unsafe/unethical working conditions, while improving environmentally friendly production practices.

How Is Fair Trade Different from Organic?

While fair trade and organic have some overlapping values, fair trade focuses more on the ethical treatment, labor, safety and wages of the people creating or growing consumer goods. Organic, on the other hand, focuses more on the environmental and safety standards surrounding farming practices and the use of potentially harmful chemicals like pesticides.

What Is Navitas Organics Doing to Support Fair Trade Initiatives?

Navitas Organics is constantly working to further increase the positive impact their business and products have to help stimulate positive change in the world. They care just as much about the health of their consumers as they do the small-scale farmers from whom they source our premium-quality ingredients. At this time, Navitas Organics Cacao Powder, Cacao Nibs and Cacao Butter have been Fairtrade certified, which means that when you purchase these products over those from companies that are not Fairtrade certified, you are choosing ingredients that were produced ethically by small-scale farmer organizations and have met the rigorous Fairtrade economic, environmental and social standards.

Since the cacao industry in particular is riddled with unethical practices and corruption, Navitas takes great pride to be a part of changing this industry for the better.

What Can You Do to Support More Fair Trade Practices?

Consumers have so much power when it comes to improving the way our global food system works. Each and every time you spend your money on a product, you are casting a vote for the kind of world and system you wish to support. By choosing to support companies like Navitas Organics and other fair trade-focused companies, you are demanding that change occurs in the system.

In addition to choosing to support fair trade with your dollars, you can also help spread the message about why fair trade matters! The more people become aware of the issues throughout our global food system, the more likely it is for change to occur. Remember: each and every person can positively affect the world around them and all it takes is small ripples of change to create really big waves.
